Ethical Clothing Standards: The Difference Between the Labels

Labels say a lot about the garments you wear. The labels on the clothing you purchase for yourself and your baby matter. In an effort to produce clothes that are better for the environment, the worker and the consumer, different kinds of clothing certifications exist. Each certification comes with its own set of standards and guidelines that must be followed to ensure the quality, ethical production and assembly of the garments. But what do all these different labels mean? We outlined a few of the most popular ethical clothing standards below. Read on to find out more.

The FAIRTRADE Mark
The FAIRTRADE Mark label means that the cotton within the garment was produced within a Fairtrade certified organization located in a developing country. This certification guarantees that the organization that manufactures the cotton will receive a fair price for their cotton in an effort to support the development and well-being of small-scale farmers. To earn the FAIRTRADE Mark certification, organizations must completely prohibit forced labor and child labor.

World Fair Trade Organization
A garment with the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) label means that it meets all of the WFTO criteria. In order to meet these guidelines, a company must be assessed based on WTFO’s 10 Fair Trade Principles. These principles include:

  • Create opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
  • Transparency and accountability in management and commercial relationships
  • Maintenance of fair trading principles
  • Fair payment to workers
  • Prohibition of child labor and forced labor
  • Commitment to non-discrimination in any part of employment
  • Good working conditions
  • Providing capacity building
  • Promotion of fair trade
  • Respect for environment

If a garment contains a WFTO label, not only does it guarantee ethical production and fair trade requirements, but it also represents support against poverty and inequality.

The Soil Association
The Soil Association supports the work of companies that make efforts to reduce their environmental footprints in their clothing production process. Specifically, this certification is mostly concerned with reducing environmental and social impacts caused by manufacturing products. Garments with this label are made with efforts to reduce energy and water usage, in safe working conditions and without the use of harmful chemicals.

The Global Organic Textile Standard
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) means the clothing item was made in accordance with the Soil Association guidelines and guarantees that the product is made with at least 70% organic fibers. Additionally, a GOTS certification label ensures that a product was made with an all-encompassing set of ethical standards including production, environmental, technical and social guidelines. With a GOTS certified garment, you can be sure you are purchasing a high-quality garment that has been treated with 100% environmentally and socially responsible techniques from the farming process to delivery.
