Motherhood as an Oxymoron

Calling all moms. Motherhood is a special journey unique to each mother and her children. What’s true for some mothers won’t be true for others. But among these differences that make every mother-child relationship unique are a few things that are the same. A few aspects of motherhood that you’ll quickly find to remain true across the board are the contradicting realities of motherhood and the struggle in finding balance in your life as a mom. Here are three ways motherhood may feel like an oxymoron for you.

Motherhood means finding identity in navigating the unknown
Contrary to popular belief, no one knows how to be the perfect mother all the time. Even the moms who look like they have it all together still feel lost every now and then. There are no hard and fast guidelines to motherhood, and part of learning to be the best mother is figuring out what works for you and your family. Motherhood is a process of learning after all. In fact, you will learn to make the most out of the moments where you have no idea what to do. Motherhood can teach you to find identity in those moments of confusion and to make this journey uniquely your own.

Motherhood is doing everything and feeling like you’ve done nothing
As a mom, the moments where you feel as though there is nothing left to check off the to-do list are few and far between. It seems like there is always another laundry load to throw into the washer, another errand to squeeze into your weekend and another mess to clean up, which is more than likely not your own. However, one of the truths of motherhood is that no matter how much you do for your children, there will be times where it feels like your love and work go unnoticed. Motherhood is doing it anyway.

Motherhood is being the best friend and the worst enemy
Motherhood means wearing all the hats--moms are in fact synonymous with superheroes. You can be the caretaker, the provider, the maid, the chauffeur, the cook, the listener and the boo-boo kisser all in the span of 24 hours. But most of all, you will find yourself as your child’s best friend and seemingly worst enemy at the same time. Motherhood means being your child’s biggest confidant, loudest supporter and most reliable advice-giver. However, motherhood is a double-edged sword in the sense that you will also be the biggest rule-maker and the hardest discipline-enforcer. As a mother, you will wear both hats––both the best friend and worst enemy. Remember that it comes with the territory, and perhaps, just being a mother requires putting on the biggest hat of all.

Motherhood is full of surprises, ups and downs and moments of confusion followed by moments of clarity. Let’s be honest––motherhood is a contradiction at best. But it’s also one of the greatest gifts, which is a contradiction in itself.
