What Does a GOTS Certification Mean?

The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the world’s leading processing, manufacturing and trading standard for the entire textile supply chain. As described by the Global Standard, the goal of these guidelines “is to define world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.” With a GOTS certification, consumers can be certain that their product has been treated with 100% environmentally and socially responsible techniques from the farming process to delivery. Read on to learn about the GOTS certification guidelines.

Production Criteria
The first of the GOTS certification requirements as stated by the Global Standard refers to the production of material fibers beginning during the farming and harvesting period. A product labeled with a GOTS certification must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers, which means these fibers have not been treated with pesticides or chemical fertilizers of any kind during the farming and harvesting process.

Environmental Criteria
The GOTS certification guarantees that all chemical inputs and toxins are evaluated and adhere to specific requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. This standard bans the use of heavy metals, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their enzymes. In addition to regulating chemical inputs, the environmental criteria of the GOTS certification also require operators to establish an “environmental policy including target goals and procedures to minimize waste and discharges,” and keep complete records of the use of chemicals, energy, water consumption and wastewater.

Technical Criteria
The technical aspect of the GOTS standard addresses how certain quality measures must be met such as washing fastness and shrinkage values. In addition, everything from the raw materials to the final product must adhere to specific regulations concerning unwanted residues.

Social Criteria
The GOTS certification calls for social criteria “based on the key norms of the International Labor Organization to be met by all processors and manufacturers” to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all employees involved in the production of GOTS certified products. Some of these qualifications include that employment must be freely chosen, working conditions must be safe and hygienic, child labor is prohibited, living wages are required and working hours are not excessive.
