Common Pregnancy Myths Debunked

Newsflash––the rumors don’t stop in middle school. There are handfuls of assumptions out there disguised as facts about pregnancy. Some are believable, and others are just downright absurd. But every pregnant woman deserves to know the truth about what’s going on with her body. That’s why we’re here. We’re myth-busting those pregnancy rumors, so you know exactly what happens every step of the way.

Spicy foods induce pre-term labor
The food you eat during pregnancy is important to keep both you and your baby healthy over these nine months. However, while there are certain foods recommended for expecting moms because they are rich in nutrients and contain other health benefits, there are rumors that other types of food should be avoided. For instance, you may have heard that spicy foods can trigger pre-term labor. There is no scientific evidence that spicy foods can induce labor, but they can irritate your intestines, which may result in varying levels of discomfort. Go ahead and give into your spicy food cravings. Order the spicy pad thai––just eat it in moderation so you can avoid the post-meal belly ache later.

Raising your hands above your head is dangerous
Rumor has it that raising your arms above your head can tangle the umbilical cord around the baby’s neck. In reality, it takes a lot more physical movement and effort to move the baby at all––let alone wrap the umbilical cord around your baby. Even if the umbilical cord does get tangled, it won’t take long for a doctor to unwrap it during delivery.

Cocoa butter clears stretch marks
Many women become victims to unwanted stretch marks as a result of a rapidly growing belly, and we wish we had a cure-all solution for them. Unfortunately, cocoa butter isn’t the answer. Every woman’s body is different and reacts to pregnancy in a different way. However, certain belly creams exist to minimize the effects of stretch marks. If you do experience intense stretch marks, don’t lather up with cocoa butter. Instead look for lotions that contain higher levels of vitamin E to smooth your skin out.

More heartburn means more baby hair
Allegedly, the more heartburn you experience while pregnant, the more hair your baby will have when he or she is born. However, this assumption couldn’t be farther from the truth. There isn’t any scientific correlation between heartburn during pregnancy and the amount of hair on your baby’s head. In fact, many women report experiencing serious heartburn while pregnant and give birth to a baby with very little hair. Imagine that!

Any and all gender clues
When you’re waiting around for nine months for one of the most significant events of your entire life, it’s easy to get creative. You may hear that if your face looks different or you experience severe morning sickness, you’re pregnant with a girl. Others say that if your baby has a slow heartbeat, you’re pregnant with a boy. There is truly no accurate way to predict a baby’s gender other than to just wait and see. By all means, take a guess and make a fun game out of it. You have a 50/50 chance of being right, after all!

Pregnancy can be a confusing nine months, and getting caught up in these pregnancy myths can make matters even worse. Steer clear of these pregnancy rumors, so you know what to expect while you’re expecting.
